Georgetown vs. Virginia Prediction: Can No. 5 Cavaliers Continue Hot Streak in First Round of NCAA Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday, May 10th?

Virginia opens the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU as the No. 5 seed and one of the hottest teams in the country. The Cavaliers are -300 favorites and laying 2.5 goals against Georgetown after storming through the ACC Tournament with wins over Notre Dame and North Carolina, including a 16-6 title-game demolition of the Tar Heels.

Georgetown arrives as the Big East automatic qualifier after beating Denver 11-8 in the semifinal and Providence 14-6 in the championship game to claim its eighth straight league tournament title. The Hoyas have earned respect as a tough postseason program, but this is a major step up in class against a Virginia team that looks like a legitimate national title threat at +1000.

Georgetown vs. Virginia Prediction - NCAA Lacrosse Tournament

Virginia’s late-season surge has completely changed the shape of its season. The Cavaliers started 3-4, but have since ripped through the stretch run and turned their best lacrosse into a conference title. Their ACC Tournament path was especially impressive because it came against elite competition, beating top-seeded Notre Dame 15-10 in the semifinal before holding North Carolina to six goals in the final. Jake Marek’s play in goal has stabilized the defense, while McCabe Millon and a deep attacking group have given UVA enough scoring punch to overwhelm even top-five opponents.

Georgetown’s profile is built on discipline, defense, and postseason toughness. The Hoyas are 10-4, ranked inside the national top 10, and enter off a dominant Big East final in which they handled Providence 14-6. Liam Connor, Rory Connor, and Georgetown’s offensive core give the Hoyas enough skill to make this uncomfortable, while goalie Anderson Moore gives them a stabilizing presence if the game turns into a grind. The problem is that Georgetown’s recent run came through the Big East, while Virginia just beat Notre Dame and North Carolina by a combined 15 goals.

The recent tournament history also gives this matchup some edge. These teams last met in the NCAA Tournament in May 2023, when Virginia beat Georgetown 17-14 in a high-scoring battle. That type of game script would still favor the Cavaliers because they are the more explosive team and have the stronger current form. Georgetown can make this physical and defensive, but UVA’s ability to score in waves creates separation potential that most teams in this bracket do not have.

Georgetown vs. Virginia Best Bet

Georgetown is good enough to keep stretches tight, but Virginia is playing too well to step in front of right now. The Cavaliers have won by 5+ in back-to-back games against top-five opponents, have the goalie form to support their defense, and have enough offensive depth to turn one strong quarter into a comfortable margin. This is a gritty regional-style matchup, but UVA looks like a freight train heading into the tournament.
