The Kentucky Derby goes off today at Churchill Downs, and this is one of those races where trip, pace, and positioning matter just as much as raw talent.
That’s exactly why I’m landing on No. 18 Further Ado.
He’s sitting around 6-1 on the morning line, but there’s a strong chance that price doesn’t hold. This is one of the most popular horses among handicappers this week, and when that kind of consensus builds, the market usually follows.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up much shorter by post time.

But this isn’t just a hype play. The setup makes a ton of sense.
Starting from the outside is a huge advantage in a race like the Derby, especially for a horse with tactical speed. Further Ado doesn’t need the lead, but he can stay within striking distance early without getting caught in traffic.
That’s critical in a 20-horse field.
Based on pace projections, he should sit just off the leaders, likely one path outside heading into the final turn. That’s exactly where you want to be. Close enough to pounce, but not buried inside or forced into a wide, inefficient trip. That projected trip is a big reason I like him so much.
From there, it becomes a matter of execution, and he’s shown he has the ability to finish. Now, is he the most talented horse in the field? Maybe not. There are some valid concerns. He’s not the biggest horse, and there’s always the question of a bounce after a strong last effort. Those are real factors, especially in a race this demanding.
But that’s also why we’re getting a playable price.
When I look at this field, I make his fair odds closer to the 5-2 to 7-2 range. If you’re getting anything better than that, there’s value. And more importantly, his profile screams consistency. He’s the type of horse that should be there late. The trip sets up well, the pace works in his favor, and he has the positioning to avoid the chaos that usually defines this race. That’s exactly what you want for a show bet, and it’s why I think he’s one of the safest plays to hit the board. But given the setup and his path through the race, he’s also very live to win.
