4 Minute Read2026 Belmont Stakes Prediction: Can Renegade Make Some Noise at Saratoga Tonight?
The Belmont Stakes may not feature a Triple Crown on the line this year, but it does feature what I believe is the best 3-year-old in the field.
I’m backing No. 4 Renegade to win.
If you watched the Kentucky Derby, you already know why this horse deserves to be the favorite. Renegade endured a brutal trip from the moment the gates opened, getting squeezed back early and finding himself far behind the leaders. Despite all of that adversity, he still unleashed a massive late rally and nearly ran down Golden Tempo at the wire.

2026 Preakness Stakes Prediction
Few horses possess the combination of talent, composure, and closing ability required to overcome that type of trip in a 20-horse Derby field. Had Renegade drawn a cleaner trip or saved even a little ground around the far turn, there’s a very real chance he would already be wearing a blanket of roses. What makes this setup even more appealing is the projected pace.
This year’s Belmont field lacks true front-end speed, which should allow jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. to put Renegade in a much more comfortable stalking position rather than forcing him to come from the clouds. Drawing the No. 4 post gives Ortiz options and should allow him to stay out of trouble while keeping the favorite within striking distance throughout the race. That’s a dangerous proposition for the rest of the field.
Todd Pletcher has won this race before and knows exactly how to prepare a horse for this stage. Pairing one of the sport’s top trainers with one of the nation’s best jockeys only adds confidence to an already strong favorite. The biggest concern with Renegade isn’t talent. It’s price.
Everyone knows he’s the horse to beat, and bettors have been backing him heavily since the field was announced. But sometimes the obvious answer is the correct answer. Renegade owns the strongest form entering the race, the most impressive Derby effort despite defeat, and arguably the most favorable pace setup among the major contenders. For exotic wagers, I want exposure to several horses capable of hitting the board alongside him.
Chief Wallabee remains a logical threat after a strong Kentucky Derby performance, while Golden Tempo has already proven capable of winning on the biggest stage. The rest of the field is competitive enough that spreading in the exacta makes sense, especially in a race where traffic and positioning can change everything.

At the end of the day, though, I keep coming back to one conclusion.
Renegade is simply the best horse in this field, and this race sets up perfectly for him to prove it.
