Cruz Azul meets NYCFC in Phase One of the Leagues Cup on Sunday night, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 PM ET on FS1 and Apple TV. Cruz Azul is a +135 underdog, the draw is priced at +230 and NYCFC enters at +185 for the matchup at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Both clubs enter with three points after winning their opening tournament matches.
The market gives NYCFC a slight edge because of the venue, but Cruz Azul enters with the stronger overall résumé and considerable momentum. La Máquina has won four of its past five matches across all competitions and is coming off another composed performance against one of MLS's stronger teams. NYCFC has also played well recently, setting up a much more competitive matchup than the plus-money Cruz Azul price suggests.

Cruz Azul vs. New York City FC Prediction
Cruz Azul opened Leagues Cup by defeating Philadelphia Union 1-0 on Thursday. José Paradela scored after only three minutes following a combination with Omar Campos, and goalkeeper Kevin Mier protected the advantage as Philadelphia increased the pressure after halftime. The result continued a strong stretch that also includes a 3-1 victory over Toluca in the Campeón de Campeones and Liga MX wins over Puebla and Atlético de San Luis. Cruz Azul has now won four of its last five, with its only defeat coming 3-2 against Atlante.
NYCFC was equally successful in its opener, beating Santos Laguna 2-0 at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Tayvon Gray broke through in the 50th minute before Nico Cavallo doubled the advantage 16 minutes later, while Matt Freese made five saves to preserve the clean sheet. The final margin was convincing, but Santos created enough opportunities to force Freese into a standout performance, which becomes more concerning against a Cruz Azul attack carrying considerably greater quality.
This will be the first competitive meeting between Cruz Azul and NYCFC. The Mexican side enters as the reigning Liga MX champion after defeating Pumas in the Clausura final, giving it extensive recent experience navigating high-pressure matches. Paradela has also emerged as an important attacking presence, while the combination of Omar Campos, Carlos Rodríguez and Gabriel Fernández gives Cruz Azul multiple ways to attack rather than relying on a single scorer.
NYCFC's home-field advantage and strong defensive performance against Santos make this a legitimate challenge, but Cruz Azul has already shown that it can travel into an MLS venue, grab an early lead and defend it for 90 minutes. Philadelphia generated sustained second-half pressure Thursday and still could not find an equalizer. With both teams entering on three points, another regulation victory would put either side in an excellent Phase One position, reducing the likelihood that Cruz Azul approaches this conservatively.

The +135 moneyline is the most appealing part of the matchup. NYCFC deserves respect after its 2-0 opener, but Cruz Azul is the more accomplished side, has won four of five and already passed a difficult road test against Philadelphia earlier this week. With La Máquina carrying championship experience and enough midfield quality to prevent NYCFC from controlling possession comfortably, the underdog price provides strong value.
