3 Minute ReadPlymouth Argyle vs. Exeter City Prediction: Can Plymouth Dominate in Monday's EFL Carabao Cup Match?
Plymouth hosts Exeter in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Monday, with kickoff scheduled for 3 PM ET on Paramount+. Argyle is a -265 favorite in regulation, the draw is priced at +390 and Exeter enters at +600. Plymouth is also -550 to advance, while the -1.5 spread is available at -105.
This is also a Devon Derby, which adds some volatility to what otherwise looks like a significant mismatch on paper. Plymouth narrowly missed the League One playoffs last season and enters after an unbeaten preseason, while Exeter was relegated to League Two and has undergone a substantial squad reset.

Plymouth Argyle vs. Exeter City Prediction
Plymouth finished last season strongly, closing with a 3-2 win at Northampton after beating Port Vale 2-1 and AFC Wimbledon 3-1 during the final weeks. That momentum has carried into preparation for 2026-27. Argyle beat Plymouth Parkway 4-1, Bath City 3-0, Torquay United 1-0 and Truro City 1-0 before holding Championship side Bristol City to a 0-0 draw and finishing preseason with another 4-1 victory over Tavistock.
Tom Cleverley also has a deeper group than a year ago after adding seven players during the summer, with striker Will Evans becoming the latest arrival following a 10-goal season for Mansfield Town. Captain Joe Edwards is expected back in the squad, although Michael Baidoo is facing a lengthy absence and Jack MacKenzie and Caleb Watts are still working toward returns. Even with those injuries, Plymouth should have enough attacking depth to press aggressively and sustain pressure against a lower-division opponent.
Exeter enters a very different stage of its rebuild after relegation from League One. Six out-of-contract players departed and six loanees returned to their parent clubs, leaving Matt Taylor with a younger group built around Jayden Wareham, who scored 19 league goals last season, new captain Jack Fitzwater and summer midfield addition Taylor Perry. The Grecians went 1-2-1 in their four listed preseason matches, losing 1-0 to Truro and 2-1 to Torquay while beating Weston-super-Mare 2-0 and drawing Championship side Bristol City 1-1.
The derby history does provide one warning. Exeter beat Plymouth 2-0 last October and then earned a 2-2 draw at Home Park in April, so Argyle did not win either league meeting last season. However, Exeter’s relegation and subsequent roster turnover make those results less predictive now, while Plymouth has retained greater continuity and enters this opener with stronger preseason results and home-field advantage.

The -265 moneyline and -550 advancement price offer little reason to simply back Plymouth to survive. Moving to -1.5 at -105 requires Argyle to create genuine separation, but that is reasonable against a recently relegated side still developing a new-look squad. Plymouth has scored multiple goals regularly over its recent competitive and preseason stretch, and an early breakthrough should force Exeter out of a conservative shape and create opportunities for a second or third.
