Fritz returns to the United States after another strong Wimbledon run. He defeated Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 and Patrick Kypson 6-2, 6-2, 7-5 before overcoming Lorenzo Sonego in four sets. Those results continued an encouraging summer for the American, who also reached the Halle final before losing 6-4, 6-4 to Frances Tiafoe. Fritz has already demonstrated comfort in Washington after reaching the semifinals in 2023, and he enters this year’s event as the No. 3 seed and the No. 10 player in the ATP rankings.
Bergs should not be treated as an ordinary first-round opponent. He captured his first ATP title in Eastbourne by defeating Ugo Humbert 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, then beat Humbert again at Wimbledon in a 6-2, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3 battle. His run ended when Arthur Fery survived a five-set match that finished 2-6, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(5).
Fritz also knows Bergs can make this matchup difficult. Their only previous meeting came in Halle last month, where Fritz needed three sets to earn a 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 victory. Bergs can protect his serve and compete in fast conditions, but Fritz should have a larger advantage on the return once the rallies move beyond the opening shot.
The danger for the under is another competitive tiebreak, particularly after their close meeting in Germany. However, Fritz has consistently handled lower-ranked opponents efficiently when his first serve is landing, and he dropped no more than four games in five of the nine sets he won during his first four Wimbledon matches.
