Michelsen was originally scheduled to face Jack Draper and would have entered as a slight underdog, but Draper’s withdrawal produced a dramatic shift in the market. McDonald lost in the final round of qualifying before receiving the lucky-loser position, leaving Michelsen with a considerably more favorable matchup than the one initially presented by the draw.

Alex Michelsen vs. Mackenzie McDonald Prediction
Michelsen arrives in Washington immediately after winning the Cranbrook Tennis Classic in Bloomfield Hills. He survived Aidan Mayo 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(5) in his opening match before defeating Lloyd Harris 6-3, 6-3 and Mark Lajal 6-3, 6-4. Michelsen then handled Dhakshineswar Suresh 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-2 in the semifinals and closed the tournament with a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory over Jacob Fearnley. The 21-year-old won 10 of 12 sets during the title run and controlled four of his final five sets by at least three games.
McDonald needed three sets to beat Edas Butvilas 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening qualifying round before losing 6-4, 6-4 to Trevor Svajda. His previous singles appearance ended with a first-round loss to Adam Walton at the Newport Challenger, while his Wimbledon run concluded with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 defeat against Patrick Kypson. McDonald remains a capable hard-court player, but his recent results do not suggest that he is ready to slow an opponent carrying significantly stronger momentum.
Michelsen also owns a commanding matchup history. He defeated McDonald 6-3, 6-3 at Newport in 2023 before producing another straight-sets victory, 6-3, 6-2, on the Cincinnati hard courts in 2024. Michelsen’s serve, reach and ability to redirect pace have repeatedly prevented McDonald from establishing control in baseline exchanges. McDonald has not won more than three games in any of their four previous sets, and the transition to Washington’s outdoor hard courts should continue to favor the younger American.

The -385 moneyline offers little usable value, but the straight-sets price brings Michelsen back into a reasonable range.
