Martin Damm vs. Ben Shelton Prediction
That loss interrupted an otherwise strong grass-court stretch. Shelton won the Stuttgart title by defeating Taylor Fritz in three sets, then beat Lorenzo Sonego 7-5, 6-3 in Halle before Fritz gained revenge in the quarterfinals. Shelton has already won three ATP titles this season and entered Washington with a 25-11 record, but early exits at Wimbledon and Roland Garros have raised questions about his consistency in high-pressure matches.
Damm carries considerably less tour-level experience, but he should be much sharper at the beginning of this match. The 22-year-old dominated Kimmer Coppejans 6-2, 6-0 in his first qualifying match before battling past Abdullah Shelbayh 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(4). He also reached his first ATP semifinal as a qualifier in Montpellier earlier this season, defeating Hubert Hurkacz and Roberto Bautista Agut during that breakthrough run.
This will be the first professional meeting between Shelton and Damm. Both Americans rely heavily on their serves, with the 6-foot-8 Damm capable of producing short points and protecting service games when his first delivery is landing. Shelton owns the stronger forehand, greater athleticism and significantly more experience against top-level opposition, but his aggressive style can produce stretches of rushed errors when he fails to establish an early rhythm.

Shelton should eventually find enough return opportunities to advance, but the -309 moneyline and straight-sets markets require confidence that he will immediately regain his best level. Damm has already played more than four hours of competitive tennis in Washington and showed resilience by recovering from a set down in the final qualifying round. Shelton won all four of his matches during his Stuttgart title run in three sets, and another uneven start could allow Damm to take one before the favorite’s superior power decides the match.
