4 Minute ReadCruz Hewitt vs. Alex de Minaur Prediction: Can de Minaur Dismantle Fellow Aussie in ATP Washington Round of 16?
Hewitt meets de Minaur in an all-Australian Round of 16 matchup at the ATP Washington tournament on Thursday afternoon. De Minaur is an overwhelming -1360 favorite, while Hewitt is available at +770 after producing the first ATP Tour victory of his career. The match will be available through Tennis Channel coverage.
De Minaur finally overcame his longtime struggles against Stefanos Tsitsipas in his opening match, earning a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory after losing 12 of their previous 13 meetings. The World No. 6 recovered from a 4-2 deficit in the opening set and used his speed, defensive discipline and improved serving patterns to take control of the deciding set. It was not a flawless performance, but defeating a historically difficult opponent should give the defending Washington champion an immediate confidence boost.

Cruz Hewitt vs. Alex de Minaur Prediction
Hewitt produced the surprise of the opening round by defeating Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-4. The qualifier won 83% of his first-serve points, did not face a break point and showed impressive composure while securing his first tour-level victory. Hewitt entered the week ranked No. 612, although his qualifying run and upset have already pushed him more than 250 places higher in the live rankings.
The teenager has earned his opportunity after also reaching the Wimbledon boys’ singles final earlier this month, but Thursday presents a completely different standard. De Minaur is one of the tour’s quickest players, rarely gives away cheap points and owns a return game capable of forcing Hewitt into longer exchanges than he faced against Giron. Hewitt will need an exceptional serving performance just to protect enough games to remain competitive.
There is also unusual familiarity between the Australians. De Minaur has known Hewitt for approximately a decade, has trained with him regularly and described Thursday’s matchup as a full-circle moment. Hewitt views de Minaur as an older brother and mentor, but that familiarity should benefit the established star, who understands the teenager’s patterns and has the discipline to avoid overlooking him after the Giron upset.
Hewitt’s victory deserves respect, but one strong match does not eliminate the enormous gap between a 17-year-old outside the Top 600 and a veteran Top 10 player defending an ATP 500 title. Giron failed to create a single break opportunity, while de Minaur should pressure Hewitt’s serve with his speed, anticipation and ability to redirect pace from both wings.
Cruz Hewitt vs. Alex de Minaur Best Bet
- Best Bet: Under 19.5 Total Games (-115) Check out the best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
The under requires a decisive straight-sets result, with a score such as 6-2, 6-3 or 6-3, 6-3 comfortably clearing the number. De Minaur should extend rallies, expose Hewitt’s inexperience and produce multiple break opportunities in each set. The teenager’s future remains extremely promising, but this matchup arrives too early in his development to expect more than a handful of games against the tournament’s top seed.
