Learner Tien meets Tommy Paul in the third round of the ATP Montreal National Bank Open on Friday, August 7, with the match scheduled for approximately 8:10 PM ET on Tennis Channel. Paul is a -190 moneyline favorite, while Tien enters at +150. Over 2.5 sets is available at +110.
The all-American matchup brings together two players who have already produced a competitive three-set battle this season. Paul owns the more established hard-court résumé and deserves favorite status, but Tien’s ability to defend, redirect pace and turn matches into physical exchanges makes another straight-sets result difficult to trust.

Learner Tien vs. Tommy Paul Prediction
Tien survived an unusual Montreal opener against Gael Monfils, winning 6-3, 0-6, 6-3. His level completely disappeared during the middle set before returning in the decider, another example of the 20-year-old’s ability to recover instead of allowing a bad stretch to end the match. There are still questions surrounding a recent left-arm issue, but he was able to complete three sets and advance against Monfils.
Paul was cleaner in his opening match, defeating Valentin Royer 6-4, 7-6(5). His form before Montreal was less convincing, including an immediate Washington loss to Kamil Majchrzak 7-5, 7-6(4), but Paul remains one of the better movers and returners on the North American hard courts. His ability to extend points and attack Tien’s second serve should give him the advantage over a full match.
Their only previous meeting came in the Delray Beach semifinals in February. Tien took the opening set before Paul rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory, with Paul repeatedly escaping pressure in the deciding set. Tien created six break opportunities in the third alone, so the final result was more competitive than a simple 2-1 score might suggest.

Paul is the safer choice to advance, but -190 offers limited value against an opponent who has already demonstrated that he can take a set from him. Tien remains difficult to put away, while Paul has enough consistency to respond if he falls behind. Instead of choosing which American wins the deciding set, +110 on the match reaching one provides the stronger position.
