Van de Zandschulp has earned his place in this round. He opened with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard before producing a major upset over Daniil Medvedev, winning 6-3, 7-6. The Dutchman then rallied past Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, surviving another lengthy contest to reach the fourth round of a Masters 1000 for the first time in Montreal. The Medvedev victory was his ninth career win against a Top 10 opponent, reinforcing that he remains dangerous when his serve and forehand are working together.
Mensik has taken a more efficient route. After an opening bye, he defeated Jacob Fearnley 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 before handling Terence Atmane 7-5, 6-4. That latter result carries additional weight because Atmane entered with significant momentum after defeating Jack Draper and Karen Khachanov. Mensik absorbed the Frenchman’s aggressive first-strike tennis without allowing the match to reach a deciding set, exactly the type of controlled performance required against Van de Zandschulp.
This will be the first career meeting between Mensik and Van de Zandschulp.
