Paul enters the outdoor hard-court matchup as a slight -120 favorite, with Hurkacz available at -102. The No. 18 seed received a first-round bye, while Hurkacz already has one Cincinnati match behind him after beating lucky loser Sho Shimabukuro 6-2, 6-4.
Paul's overall 2026 season has included some strong stretches, highlighted by his Houston title and a run to the Queen's Club final. His form has cooled considerably since Wimbledon, however, and the North American hard-court swing has produced two particularly disappointing defeats.

Tommy Paul vs. Hubert Hurkacz Prediction
Kamil Majchrzak knocked Paul out of Washington 7-5, 7-6(4), and Learner Tien then dominated him 6-3, 6-2 in Montreal. Paul has now lost early in consecutive hard-court tournaments and arrives in Cincinnati needing to rediscover the consistency that carried him through the first half of the season.
Hurkacz also exited Montreal earlier than expected, but his 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5 loss to Botic van de Zandschulp was far more competitive. More importantly, his serve immediately looked comfortable in Cincinnati as he handled Shimabukuro in 73 minutes without dropping a set.
Paul owns a 3-2 career advantage in the head-to-head, so this has not traditionally been an easy matchup for Hurkacz. The Pole did win their most recent meeting at Wimbledon last month, recovering from a set down to beat Paul 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-5, 6-2 in a serve-dominated third-round match.
The surface should again give Hurkacz an opportunity to dictate behind his biggest weapon. Cincinnati's quicker outdoor hard courts reward first-strike tennis, and Hurkacz enters already acclimated to the conditions while Paul is playing his first match since the one-sided Montreal loss to Tien.
