Fritz enters the second-round matchup as a -178 favorite, with Michelsen available at +145. The Americans just met in the Washington quarterfinals two weeks ago, while Michelsen already has a Cincinnati match under his belt after beating Jesper de Jong 6-4, 6-4 on Friday.
That Washington match could not have been much closer. Fritz won 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(6), saving a match point in the deciding tiebreak before eventually surviving after two hours and 18 minutes. Michelsen recovered immediately from a lopsided opening set and was one point away from eliminating the eventual champion.

Taylor Fritz vs. Alex Michelsen Prediction
Fritz used that escape as the springboard to the title, eventually beating Rafael Jodar 7-6(2), 6-4 in the final for his first ATP 500-or-higher trophy in nearly four years. The transition to Montreal was much rougher, with Fritz returning only 48 hours later and losing 7-5, 6-3 to Thiago Agustin Tirante while struggling physically in the second set.
Michelsen has remained dangerous since Washington. He beat Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 6-4 and Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in Montreal before Daniel Merida finally stopped him 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1. His straight-set win over de Jong in Cincinnati gives him another recent victory on the surface entering this rematch.
The head-to-head is also much more favorable to Michelsen than the betting line suggests. He leads Fritz 2-1 overall and beat him 6-4, 7-6(6) on the outdoor hard courts at Indian Wells in March. Fritz finally broke through in Washington, but even that required three sets and a deciding tiebreak.
That makes another extended match appealing. Fritz remains the stronger overall player and deserves to be favored after winning Washington, but Michelsen has already shown twice this season that he can make this matchup extremely uncomfortable. Both Americans serve well enough to protect games for long stretches, and one tight set can quickly push the match toward a decider.

Michelsen does not need to complete the upset for this angle to cash. He already took a set from Fritz in Washington, owns two career victories in the matchup and arrives with another clean Cincinnati win behind him. At +110, backing both players to win a set offers better value than laying -178 on Fritz to repeat a result that required him to survive match point only two weeks ago.
