Daniil Medvedev is a modest favorite against Brandon Nakashima in the Cincinnati Open third round, with the preferred moneyline price at -135. Nakashima has reached a career-high No. 22 after a major summer surge, but Medvedev brings one of the strongest Cincinnati résumés remaining in the draw.
Nakashima enters in arguably the best form of his career. He reached his first Masters 1000 final in Montreal last week, beating Rafael Jodar 7-6(3), 6-4 in the semifinal after another strong tournament that pushed him to a career-high ranking. He then transitioned quickly to Cincinnati and beat Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-2, 7-5 in his opener.

That workload is worth monitoring. Nakashima played deep into Montreal and is already back competing at another Masters 1000 less than a week later. He has still accumulated 19 hard-court wins this season, but Medvedev is directly ahead of him with 20 and has played significantly less tennis over the past several days.
Medvedev opened Cincinnati with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over qualifier Marco Trungelliti. It was his 100th career Masters 1000 hard-court victory, and he enters this matchup 31-13 on the season with two titles. He has also won 21 of his 23 career singles trophies on hard courts.
Cincinnati has long been one of the tournaments where Medvedev is comfortable. He owns a 16-8 career record at the event and won the title in 2019, part of the North American hard-court stretch that first established him as one of the world's elite players. His deep return position, patience and ability to absorb pace are particularly troublesome for players who prefer clean baseline exchanges.
The head-to-head strengthens the case. Medvedev leads Nakashima 3-0, beating him 6-4, 6-3 at Indian Wells in 2023, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 on Madrid clay in 2025 and 6-2, 7-6(1) in the Brisbane final this January. Nakashima has improved since those earlier meetings, but he still has not proven he can consistently hit through Medvedev.

Nakashima's current form is the reason this price is only around -135, and backing Medvedev is certainly less comfortable than it would have been several weeks ago. Still, the combination of a 3-0 matchup edge, fresher legs, a 16-8 Cincinnati record and a career built around winning exactly these types of hard-court matches provides enough separation. Medvedev does not need to cover a games handicap or win in straight sets, making the moneyline the cleanest approach.
