Fils enters as a -172 favorite over de Minaur +140 in one of Wednesday's most intriguing Cincinnati round-of-16 matches. The preferred angle avoids choosing the winner entirely, with Over 2.5 Sets available at +110 and a smaller lean toward Fils winning 2-1 at +250.
Fils opened with a 7-6(5), 6-1 victory over Yannick Hanfmann before getting a much stronger test from Jiri Lehecka. He dominated the opening set, missed a match point in the second-set tiebreak and then regrouped to beat the No. 9 seed 6-1, 6-7(7), 6-3. Fils is now 27-10 this season and already owns the Barcelona title.

De Minaur's Cincinnati path has been similarly competitive. Quentin Halys blew him off the court 6-1 in the opening set of their first match before de Minaur recovered 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(4). He then beat Arthur Fery 7-5, 7-6(3), overcoming a bizarre second set in which he surrendered a large lead before dominating the tiebreak.
There is also meaningful stylistic history between these two. Fils beat de Minaur 7-5, 6-2 on Barcelona clay in 2024, while de Minaur answered with a four-set victory at Wimbledon later that season. Their most recent meeting came on indoor hard courts in Rotterdam this February, where de Minaur won 7-6(3), 6-2.
That Rotterdam result matters, but Fils is playing at a considerably higher level now than he was immediately after returning from a long layoff early in the season. He has developed into one of the most productive young players on Tour again, and his heavy forehand gives him a legitimate route to dictate against de Minaur rather than simply trying to outlast him.
De Minaur has an equally credible route to a set. His speed and return quality can force Fils into additional shots, and the Frenchman's second-round loss of focus against Lehecka showed that even when he is the better player for long stretches, clean straight-set victories are not automatic.
