This is Medvedev's first match of the tournament after receiving a first-round bye, while Damm already has a competitive match on these courts. The question is less about whether the top seed ultimately survives and more about whether he can put together two clean sets after another uneven performance in Cincinnati.

Medvedev entered Winston-Salem ranked No. 7 with a 31-13 record and titles in Brisbane and Dubai this season. His most recent tournament ended on a much shakier note, however, as he blew three match points against Brandon Nakashima before collapsing in the deciding set of a 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 Cincinnati loss.
That type of volatility has followed Medvedev even in matches where he has been a substantial favorite. He has dropped at least one set in four of his last five matches against opponents ranked outside the Top 90, making a straightforward 2-0 victory difficult to trust at such a short price.
Damm is exactly the type of opponent who can capitalize on a brief dip. The 22-year-old American is ranked No. 94 and has climbed dramatically over the past year, with his big left-handed serve giving him a way to keep sets close on hard courts. He opened Winston-Salem by beating Abdullah Shelbayh 6-4, 7-6 and has already played considerably more tennis on these courts than Medvedev.
The American does not need to sustain that level for an entire match. At 6-foot-8, Damm possesses enough first-strike power to string together a strong service set, force a tiebreak or punish one loose stretch from Medvedev. The challenge comes once the match extends, where Medvedev's return, defense and ability to expose Damm's movement should become increasingly difficult to overcome.
There is also a scheduling element worth considering. Medvedev accepted a late wild card into Winston-Salem as a final tune-up before the US Open, where he won the title in 2021. He needs matches and confidence more than he needs to produce a dominant statement against Damm, making a slightly uneven victory perfectly plausible.
