Nishikori and Ofner are scheduled for an 11:00 AM ET start on Stadium 17 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Ofner is a slight -114 favorite, with Nishikori nearly even at -106 in what the market views as one of the closest matches of Tuesday's men's qualifying slate.
There is considerably more attached to this match than a normal qualifying opener for Nishikori. The 36-year-old announced earlier this year that he will retire at the end of the 2026 season, making this his final attempt to play the US Open. He received a qualifying wild card rather than a main-draw spot, meaning the former World No. 4 must win three matches just to earn his place in the field.

Few active players have better memories in New York. Nishikori produced the greatest Grand Slam run of his career at the 2014 US Open, beating Milos Raonic, Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic before losing to Marin Cilic in the final. He returned to reach the semifinals again in 2016 and 2018, giving him a history at Flushing Meadows that makes one final run particularly meaningful.
The current version of Nishikori is obviously far removed from the player who challenged for Grand Slam titles, but there have still been flashes this summer. He returned to ATP Tour competition in Washington and came from a set down to beat Juncheng Shang before eventually losing to Rafael Jodar. More recently, Nishikori beat Francisco Comesana in three sets during Cincinnati qualifying before dropping another three-set match to Marco Trungelliti.
Ofner represents no easy opening assignment and actually owns the only previous meeting between the two. The Austrian beat Nishikori 6-3, 6-4 in Miami in 2024, although that match came during Nishikori's return from a lengthy injury absence. More than two years later, the circumstances surrounding the rematch look considerably different.
The biggest reason to back Nishikori is Ofner's current form. His last official victory came against Norbert Gombos on July 7 in Braunschweig, and he has since lost his opening match at five consecutive tournaments. Thiago Agustin Tirante beat him in Bastad, Alex Molcan knocked him out in Kitzbühel, Jacob Fearnley eliminated him from Montreal qualifying, Trungelliti beat him in Cincinnati qualifying and Roman Safiullin handled him 6-3, 6-4 in Cancun last week.
That is an especially concerning stretch entering a match where the opponent should have no shortage of motivation. Ofner has gone nearly seven weeks without an official victory and has lost four of those five matches in straight sets. Nishikori has struggled with consistency himself, but at least his recent Cincinnati run showed he can still navigate a difficult three-set match and compete deep into a deciding set.
This does not require Nishikori to suddenly turn back into the player who reached the US Open final 12 years ago. At -106, he only needs to be marginally better than an opponent whose confidence has seemingly disappeared over the past month and a half. Nishikori's return game and ability to redirect pace can force Ofner to continually hit extra balls, while his experience should become particularly valuable if the match gets tight.

The path back to the main draw requires three wins, and Nishikori cannot afford to look beyond the first one.
