Hugo Gaston vs. Andre Ilagan Prediction
Ilagan's first-round victory was much more dramatic. The American beat Tristan Boyer 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, surviving a deciding set to earn the biggest Grand Slam opportunity of his professional career. He received a qualifying wild card and is the first University of Hawai'i men's tennis player to compete at the US Open.
The upset case extends well beyond Tuesday's result. Ilagan entered the tournament at a career-high ranking around No. 210 after reaching consecutive Challenger finals. His recent run included wins over players such as Tristan Schoolkate and Jack Pinnington Jones, showing that his rise has come against legitimate Challenger-level opposition rather than a soft ITF schedule.
Gaston remains the more accomplished player, but his ATP-level season has been uneven at 4-8. His variety and left-handed patterns can frustrate inexperienced opponents, although Ilagan being a left-hander himself should make some of those unusual looks less uncomfortable than they are for most qualifying opponents.
There is also something to be said for the atmosphere. Ilagan is an American wild card playing the biggest tournament of his career in New York after a summer in which his confidence and ranking have both surged. Gaston has considerably more to lose as the third seed, while Ilagan can continue attacking as the underdog.

At +129, the price is attractive enough to chase the upset. Ilagan has been building toward this opportunity for weeks, survived a tough first-round test and is playing well enough to make Gaston's ranking advantage much less significant than it appears on paper.
