Lorenzo Sonego and James Duckworth meet Wednesday in the Winston-Salem Open Round of 16 after both produced straight-sets victories Tuesday. Sonego owns the previous head-to-head meetings, but the two veterans have never played each other on a hard court.

Lorenzo Sonego vs. James Duckworth Prediction

Sonego was equally impressive in his first match after receiving a bye, handling Adrian Mannarino 6-1, 7-6. He enters with the confidence of a clean victory and historically has had success against Duckworth, winning both previous meetings.

There is an important qualifier attached to that 2-0 record: neither meeting came on a hard court. Their most recent clash was on the grass at Eastbourne in 2022, where Sonego needed two tiebreaks after dropping the opening set to survive 4-6, 7-6, 7-6. The margins have hardly been overwhelming.

Hard courts should give Duckworth his best opportunity to reverse the matchup. His serve becomes more dangerous, he can shorten points and he has already shown this week that he can handle a seeded opponent when sets get tight. Even Tuesday's second set against Navone required him to save three set points before winning the tiebreak.

Duckworth is only 10-11 on hard courts this season, so this is not a form play based solely on his annual record. It is more about the current tournament level. He has won four consecutive sets, has already adjusted to the conditions over two matches and is getting plus money against an opponent he is capable of pushing into another tight contest.

Lorenzo Sonego vs. James Duckworth Best Bet

Sonego's 2-0 head-to-head edge explains why the market favors him, but it also creates some of the value on the other side. Duckworth has never had the opportunity to face him on the surface that best rewards his serve and first-strike game. After two convincing victories, +115 is enough to take the Australian to finally break through.
