That still points toward at least one competitive Griekspoor set. The Dutchman produced an excellent Montreal run earlier this month, beating Lorenzo Sonego, Alexander Zverev and Matteo Arnaldi. He took down Zverev 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 and also needed three sets against Arnaldi, showing he can remain dangerous against elite opposition even after falling behind.
Griekspoor's serve naturally makes him dangerous in this market. He regularly produces sets decided by one break or a tiebreak, and his recent results are full of exactly those scorelines. Shelton's return is improving, but Griekspoor only needs one stretch where he protects serve and attacks a loose Shelton service game.
Shelton remains the clear pick to ultimately advance. He defended his Montreal Masters title without dropping a set and enters the US Open ranked inside the Top 10 after reaching the semifinals here last season. His left-handed serve, athleticism and increasingly controlled baseline game give him a ceiling Griekspoor should struggle to match over five sets.
The issue is trusting Shelton to immediately produce a 3-0 sweep. His early Grand Slam rounds have often become more complicated than his moneyline would suggest, and Griekspoor is significantly more accomplished than a typical +500 first-round opponent. The Dutchman's ability to hold serve can create one frustrating set before Shelton's superior physicality and shot-making take control.
