Damm and Tiafoe are scheduled for a 9:10 PM ET start in New York, with Tiafoe favored at -382 and Damm available at +279. Rather than paying the heavy favorite price, the game total provides a much better way to approach two Americans capable of trading sets deep into the night.
There is already an almost perfect head-to-head reference. These two met at the US Open last season, with Tiafoe eventually surviving 6-4, 7-5, 6-7, 7-5. That four-set match produced 47 total games, comfortably above Monday's 40.5 number, and Damm was competitive enough that three of the four sets reached at least 7-5.

The score tells the story better than the 1-0 head-to-head record. Tiafoe won, but there was virtually no point where he could relax. Damm forced a tiebreak, took the third set and made Tiafoe earn late breaks in the other sets. Another four-set battle with similar margins would have an excellent chance of clearing 40.5 again.
Damm also enters as a much more dangerous player than he was a year ago. The 22-year-old has climbed from outside the Top 400 to around the Top 100 and just produced the biggest victory of his career in Winston-Salem, beating Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-3 without facing a break of serve. He then took the opening set 6-2 against Fabian Marozsan before eventually losing in three.
Tiafoe is arriving in excellent form himself. He reached the Cincinnati Masters final only eight days ago, beating Brandon Nakashima 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals before losing a volatile three-set championship match to Arthur Fils. He enters New York with significantly more confidence than he had earlier in the summer.
That creates the exact kind of matchup where neither player has to play poorly for the over to cash. Tiafoe has the greater consistency and should be favored to advance, but Damm's 6-foot-8 frame and improving serve can keep sets from getting away from him. Tiafoe should also receive plenty of energy from the New York crowd, while Damm has nothing to lose against one of the country's biggest stars.

The previous meeting produced 47 games and plenty of back-and-forth tension. Damm is better now, Tiafoe is coming off a Masters final and both should enter believing they can impose themselves rather than simply grind through the opening round. Four competitive sets should be enough, while a fifth would make the over extremely difficult to lose.
