Nuno Borges vs. Learner Tien Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest US Open Odds for Monday, August 31st

Learner Tien begins his US Open against Nuno Borges on Monday, August 31 with one of the most favorable head-to-head histories on the board. Tien has already beaten Borges twice without dropping a set, and his recent North American hard-court form makes the American a strong candidate to take control immediately in New York.

Nuno Borges vs. Learner Tien Prediction: Can Tien Start Hot and Handle Business in US Open First Round?

Borges and Tien are scheduled for a 5:30 PM ET start on Stadium 17, with Tien favored at -211 and Borges available at +164. Rather than laying the heavier match price, backing Tien to win the opening set and the match brings the number down to -110.

The head-to-head is the strongest argument for the favorite. Tien is 2-0 against Borges and has won all five sets they have played. He beat the Portuguese 6-2, 7-6 at the Paris Masters last October before producing an even more convincing 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory in the Australian Open third round in January. Borges has therefore had multiple opportunities on hard courts and still has not found a set-winning formula.

Nuno Borges vs. Learner Tien Prediction

That Australian Open meeting is especially useful because it came in the same best-of-five format. Borges kept the opening set close enough to force a tiebreak, but Tien won it and then increasingly separated as the match developed. Monday's bet does not require a straight-sets repeat, only for Tien to establish the same early advantage and eventually finish the job.

Tien has also become a substantially more accomplished player since those meetings. He enters around the Top 15 after reaching the Montreal semifinals this month, beating Gael Monfils, Tommy Paul, Thiago Tirante and Daniel Merida Aguilar before losing to Ben Shelton. He then beat Sebastian Baez in Cincinnati and pushed eventual finalist Frances Tiafoe to three sets.

Borges remains dangerous because of his experience and steadiness, particularly if Tien becomes impatient trying to finish points too quickly. His ability to protect break points has also been better than Tien's in recent months, so another competitive opening set would not be surprising. The matchup problem is that Tien has consistently generated more return pressure and has already proven he can win the important points against Borges.

Nuno Borges vs. Learner Tien Best Bet

There is little reason to move away from a pattern that has worked twice on hard courts, including once at a major. Tien has taken every previous set between them, enters with substantially stronger summer momentum and should have the New York crowd behind him. The first-set and match combination is the better price than simply laying -211.
