There have been encouraging signs this summer. Stephens entered the tournament with a 10-10 hard-court record in 2026 and won consecutive matches in Cincinnati before losing to Marta Kostyuk. She actually held breaks in both sets of that match before allowing the stronger player to recover, showing there is still enough level to make top opponents uncomfortable for stretches.
Tauson has the much bigger power game and deserves to be favored. The Dane sits around No. 38 and is 14-13 on hard courts this season, with her best tennis built around taking control quickly behind the serve and attacking short balls. She also reached the later rounds in Monterrey immediately before New York.
This will be the first tour-level meeting between the two, which adds some uncertainty. Tauson has never had to deal with Stephens' ability to absorb pace, change direction and frustrate aggressive hitters when her movement is sharp. Stephens, meanwhile, gets a younger opponent who has been inconsistent enough this season to leave openings.
The key is not expecting Stephens to completely rediscover her 2017 championship form. She only needs one strong set. In front of an American crowd at the tournament she will always be associated with, there should be enough motivation to produce one vintage stretch before Tauson's superior current level potentially takes over.
