That versatility matters. Sonego cannot simply point to the surface and expect the matchup to change. Zverev has beaten him in different conditions because the German's serve and backhand consistently prevent Sonego from controlling enough rallies to build sustained pressure.
Zverev also enters after the best Grand Slam season of his career. He finally captured his first major earlier this year and has climbed back to No. 2 in the rankings with a 46-13 record. The North American tune-up events were more uneven, but the overall season has firmly reestablished him among the players capable of winning this tournament.
Sonego has gone in the opposite direction. He enters around No. 91 with a losing record for the season and was eliminated from Winston-Salem by James Duckworth in straight sets. His serve can still keep individual sets close, but producing three separate set-winning performances against Zverev is a completely different requirement.
