Gauff and Sonmez are scheduled for a 7:00 PM ET start on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Gauff is an overwhelming -3000 moneyline favorite with Sonmez at +1080, leaving little question about the expected winner and shifting the focus toward how quickly the American can finish the match.
Gauff enters ranked No. 4 and has gone 25-7 on hard courts this season. Her North American swing included a semifinal appearance in Toronto before she broke through in Cincinnati, beating Jessica Pegula in straight sets in the final to capture her first title of 2026.

Coco Gauff vs. Zeynep Sonmez Prediction
That Cincinnati victory carries an obvious New York connection. Gauff also won Cincinnati immediately before capturing her first US Open championship in 2023, and she now returns looking for her third career Grand Slam title. At only 22, she has already reached at least the fourth round at this tournament in each of the last four years.
Sonmez has made significant progress of her own and reached a career-high No. 48 earlier this summer before entering the US Open at No. 53. The Turkish 24-year-old has become a legitimate Top-50 level player, but her US Open preparation was much less convincing at 3-3 across her final three tournaments.
This will be the first career meeting between them. Sonmez has enough baseline ability to grab a few games and prevent every set from becoming a complete rout, but matching Gauff's movement and returning for extended stretches is a much different challenge. Gauff should consistently force her to hit extra shots while attacking second serves whenever opportunities appear.
The 17.5-game total does not require a double-bagel type performance. A 6-3, 6-2 Gauff victory lands at only 17 games, and something like 6-2, 6-3 feels like a realistic script given the enormous gap reflected by the moneyline.

Gauff is coming off a title, playing in front of the Ashe night crowd and has every reason to conserve energy during the first round of a two-week major. Sonmez can make one set respectable without doing enough to extend the match beyond the number.
