Shelton and Hurkacz are scheduled for approximately 12:40 PM ET on Arthur Ashe Stadium, with Shelton a -260 moneyline favorite and Hurkacz available at +199. The American deserves to be favored after another excellent summer, but neither player's profile makes a routine three-set Shelton victory particularly appealing.
Shelton got an immediate wake-up call against Tallon Griekspoor in Round 1. He committed 14 unforced errors while getting blown out 6-1 in the opening set, then completely flipped the match to win 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(3), 6-2. Once the serve settled down, Shelton held throughout the final three sets and increasingly overwhelmed Griekspoor with his power.

That fits a larger pattern with Shelton at majors. He can eventually overpower players outside the elite tier, but the early rounds are not always clean. The lefty brings enormous energy and one of the biggest serves in tennis, yet temporary stretches of loose errors frequently give opponents an opening before he finds his best level.
Hurkacz is particularly well equipped to capitalize on one of those stretches. The former World No. 6 has rebuilt his ranking back inside the Top 50 after injuries derailed much of his previous season, and his serve remains one of the most dangerous weapons on tour. He has already produced more than 500 aces this season and can turn almost any set into a tiebreak with a few efficient service games.
His first-round performance followed a similar script to Shelton's. Hurkacz beat Damir Dzumhur 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, dropping the second before allowing only two games across the final two sets. He also enters after winning the Cancun Challenger and has shown this summer that his level is moving much closer to the player who once reached No. 6 in the world.
Surprisingly, this will be the first career meeting between Shelton and Hurkacz. Both have registered serves as fast as 151 mph, which makes breaks particularly valuable and creates an obvious path toward competitive sets. Shelton has the superior athleticism and current confidence, but Hurkacz does not need to outperform him for three sets. He only needs one stretch where the first serve takes over.
Shelton's overall season still makes him the much more trustworthy winner. He successfully defended his Canadian Masters title and has won four tournaments this year across hard, clay and grass courts. He also has considerably stronger US Open history, including his 2023 semifinal run, while Hurkacz has never advanced beyond the second round in New York.

The better game script is similar to both players' first-round matches. Hurkacz's serve should be good enough to steal a set somewhere, but Shelton has more ways to adjust once the match develops and should eventually impose his athleticism, return pressure and home-court energy. A four-set Shelton victory fits better than asking the American to cruise.
