Denis Shapovalov and Luca Van Assche meet Wednesday in the US Open second round after both produced impressive four-set victories in their opening matches. Shapovalov owns the higher ranking and significantly more Grand Slam experience, but Van Assche enters in excellent form and just eliminated a seeded opponent to reach this stage for the first time in New York.

4 Minute ReadDenis Shapovalov vs. Luca Van Assche Prediction: Can Van Assche Pull Slight Upset After Strong Summer Run?
Shapovalov and Van Assche are scheduled for approximately 2:00 PM ET on Court 13, with Shapovalov favored at -153 and Van Assche available at +121. That is a relatively short favorite price considering Shapovalov's name recognition, creating an appealing opportunity to back the Frenchman after his excellent opening-round performance.
Van Assche produced one of the more impressive upsets of Round 1. He lost an extremely tight opening-set tiebreak to No. 29 seed Cameron Norrie but never allowed the disappointment to affect him, responding with consecutive 6-2 sets before finishing the match 6-3 in the fourth. After losing the opener, he outscored Norrie 18-7 across the next three sets.

Denis Shapovalov vs. Luca Van Assche Prediction
That victory extended what has quietly become a very strong stretch. Van Assche won the Quebec City Challenger in late August, beating Rei Sakamoto, Benjamin Bonzi, Hugo Gaston and Stefanos Sakellaridis during the run. He then immediately moved to Winston-Salem, where Aleksandar Kovacevic finally stopped him 6-1, 7-6.
The overall hard-court form is much better than it appeared earlier in the summer. Van Assche has now won six of his last seven completed matches, with the only defeat coming against Kovacevic, and his season record has climbed comfortably above .500. He has also become much more comfortable handling pressure sets, winning several late tiebreaks and tight closing sets during the Quebec run.
Shapovalov deserves plenty of respect after his own strong opener. He defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, improving to 6-0 in that head-to-head matchup. The Canadian blasted 19 aces and won 85% of his first-serve points, eventually overwhelming Kecmanovic after a competitive opening three sets.
The problem remains Shapovalov's volatility. He landed only 51% of his first serves and committed 11 double faults in Round 1, numbers that create an opening against a patient returner. Van Assche is unlikely to give Shapovalov as many immediate winners from neutral rallies and should be willing to extend points until the Canadian starts pressing.
There is no previous head-to-head meeting, which makes current form even more important. Shapovalov owns the considerably higher career ceiling and has reached a US Open quarterfinal, but his 2026 season has remained inconsistent. He entered New York with a losing record and had just been beaten in straight sets by Kovacevic at Winston-Salem.

Van Assche has already beaten the seeded Norrie here, enters with a recent title and is showing the ability to stay composed when matches become physical. Shapovalov can serve his way through stretches, but at +121 the market is not asking much for the younger player to continue his run. Back Van Assche to absorb the early power, extend the match and eventually expose Shapovalov's inconsistency.
