Rei Sakamoto vs. Frances Tiafoe Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest US Open Odds for Wednesday, September 2nd
Rei Sakamoto and Frances Tiafoe meet Wednesday night after both survived five-set thrillers in the opening round. Sakamoto's enormous serve makes him dangerous enough to grab a set, but Tiafoe's Grand Slam experience and history of thriving in New York should ultimately decide the matchup.

Sakamoto and Tiafoe are scheduled for approximately 7:00 PM ET, with Tiafoe a -410 favorite and Sakamoto at +296. The better betting opportunity is not asking Tiafoe to sweep, instead combining his moneyline with both players winning a set at +100.
Tiafoe barely survived one of the best matches of Round 1. Martin Damm pushed him all the way to five sets, with Tiafoe eventually winning 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 just before 1:00 AM. The American trailed two sets to one before using the crowd and his experience to completely reverse the momentum.

Rei Sakamoto vs. Frances Tiafoe Prediction
That result is exactly why laying a huge price on a Tiafoe straight-sets victory is unattractive. He remains one of the most dangerous players in New York when matches become emotional and physical, but he also gives opponents openings. Damm took advantage for two full sets before Tiafoe finally raised his level.
Sakamoto arrives with even more mileage. The 20-year-old qualifier needed five sets to beat Aleksandar Vukic, winning 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in nearly three and a half hours. Most impressively, he blasted 38 aces, an enormous serving performance for a player making his first significant Grand Slam run.
This has already been an emotional tournament for Sakamoto. He qualified for the main draw by beating fellow Japanese player Kei Nishikori in what became the final Grand Slam match of Nishikori's career, then immediately followed it with his first main-draw major victory. He enters the Tiafoe match with very little to lose.
There is no previous meeting between them, but the serving matchup creates an obvious path for Sakamoto to steal one. If he produces anything close to 38 aces again, Tiafoe will have stretches where he simply cannot generate enough return pressure. One tiebreak or one early break could be enough.
The full five-set format still favors Tiafoe significantly. He has reached the US Open semifinals twice, knows exactly how to manage the Ashe or Armstrong atmosphere and has repeatedly produced his best tennis once the crowd becomes involved. Sakamoto is experiencing all of this for the first time.

Both players just showed that dropping sets does not necessarily change their ability to win a match. Sakamoto has enough serve to put one on the board, but Tiafoe should have the better return game, movement and composure as the match progresses.
