The match exposed several concerns. Zverev committed uncharacteristic forehand errors, struggled to finish break opportunities and needed 22 break-point chances to convert only five. He also spent nearly five hours on court, hardly the ideal opening workload for someone trying to win seven matches.
There is another way to interpret it. Zverev described the battle as a match he needed, and he noticeably improved his movement and return quality as the night progressed. After surviving a near-disaster, there should be no danger of overlooking Halys or approaching Round 2 without urgency.
Halys played a solid opener, beating Facundo Diaz Acosta 6-4, 7-5, 6-7, 6-1. He hit 18 aces and won 82% of his first-serve points, so the Frenchman has enough firepower to make this uncomfortable if Zverev allows another slow start.
The head-to-head is what supports the bounce-back angle. Zverev has beaten Halys twice this season. He won 7-6, 7-6 in Miami and then 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 at Roland Garros. Halys has therefore taken only one of six sets despite pushing several others deep.
Those results show the danger and the opportunity. Halys' serve can force tiebreaks, but Zverev has repeatedly been better in the high-pressure points. The German also knows exactly what the matchup looks like after seeing him twice within the last six months.

The five-hour opener creates understandable fatigue concerns, but Zverev is 29 and one of the best-conditioned players on tour. Rather than expecting another physical collapse, the more likely response is an aggressive attempt to get off court quickly.
A shaky Round 1 should sharpen the top seed. Halys can keep individual sets close, but Zverev has enough matchup history and return quality to win all three.
