Svajda and Gea are scheduled for approximately 4:00 PM ET on Court 6, with Svajda a slight -132 favorite and Gea at +105. The rankings are similarly close at No. 80 and No. 87, making this one of Thursday's genuine coin-flip second-round matches.
Svajda looked excellent for most of his opener against Daniel Altmaier. He won the first two sets 6-3, 6-1 before dropping a third-set tiebreak, then had play interrupted by rain. When the match resumed, Svajda immediately broke and closed out the fourth 6-2 to advance.

That response after the delay was particularly impressive. Weather interruptions can completely change rhythm, especially after losing a tiebreak, but Svajda came back onto the court and immediately reestablished control rather than allowing Altmaier to build on the momentum.
The obvious concern is turnaround time. Rain wreaked havoc with the US Open schedule Tuesday and Wednesday, forcing a backlog of outdoor matches and leaving several players competing on consecutive days. Svajda now has far less recovery time than he normally would between Grand Slam matches.
Gea has his own workload concerns. The Frenchman needed five sets and more than three hours to beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3, 2-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in Round 1. He hit seven aces and 61 winners but also committed eight double faults and won only 40% of his second-serve points.
Gea's overall summer deserves respect. He captured the Los Cabos title last month, beating Coleman Wong and Denis Shapovalov along the way, and he has shown he belongs at this level despite entering the main draw as a lucky loser.
The matchup should come down to who handles the short stretches better. Svajda was much cleaner behind the serve Wednesday and showed an ability to immediately reset after a disruption. Gea has the higher recent tournament ceiling but also gave Cerundolo repeated looks at second serves and needed five sets to survive.

There is no previous meeting to lean on, so immediate tournament form carries more weight. Svajda is playing at home, looked dominant for three of four sets Wednesday and should benefit from remaining in competitive rhythm rather than having several days to cool off.
Fatigue is real, but momentum can matter just as much when the turnaround is this short. Svajda's current serving level makes him the preferred side at a manageable price.
