Ben Shelton vs. Denis Shapovalov Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest US Open Odds for Friday, September 4th

Ben Shelton and Denis Shapovalov meet Friday night in a blockbuster third-round matchup between two explosive left-handers. Shelton has dropped a set in both of his US Open matches so far, but his serve has become increasingly difficult to touch and the head-to-head history against Shapovalov is about as convincing as it gets.

Ben Shelton vs. Denis Shapovalov Prediction: Can Ben Shelton Steamroll Shapo on Friday Night at US Open?

Shelton and Shapovalov are scheduled for approximately 9:10 PM ET, with Shelton a heavy -395 favorite and Shapovalov at +281. Shelton to win 3-0 sets at +160 is the more aggressive approach, but the matchup history creates enough support to chase the plus-money sweep.

Shelton has not been flawless in New York. Tallon Griekspoor destroyed him 6-1 in the opening set of Round 1 before Shelton completely flipped the match, winning 6-1, 7-6, 6-2. He then beat Hubert Hurkacz 6-3, 5-7, 7-6, 7-5 in the second round, needing another four sets against one of the biggest servers in the field.

Ben Shelton vs. Denis Shapovalov Prediction

Those dropped sets are the clear warning for a 3-0 wager. Shelton can take a little time to settle into matches and has occasionally sprayed the forehand when trying to do too much. The difference Friday is that he now gets an opponent whose patterns he knows extremely well rather than another unfamiliar matchup.

Shelton is a perfect 4-0 against Shapovalov. He beat him in five sets at Wimbledon in 2024, took a straight-sets meeting in Shanghai later that year and also won their Washington matchup. Their most recent clash came in the Dallas semifinals this February, where Shapovalov won the opening set before Shelton recovered 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.

That Dallas match showed how close individual sets can become, but the larger pattern is brutal for Shapovalov. He has had four different opportunities across grass, outdoor hard and indoor hard conditions and still has never finished a match against Shelton. The American's heavier left-handed serve and ability to attack Shapovalov's one-handed backhand have consistently tilted the biggest points.

Shapovalov has looked good enough in New York to make the sweep risky. He beat Miomir Kecmanovic in four sets and then produced his cleanest performance of the tournament against Luca Van Assche, winning 6-0, 6-4, 7-6. His serve was much more controlled in Round 2 and he enters with confidence after finally putting together consecutive wins.

Shelton's serving level is still the bigger weapon. He had to deal with Hurkacz's elite serve Wednesday and responded by winning the two tightest sets of the match, including a third-set tiebreak and a 7-5 fourth. Against Shapovalov, Shelton should have more return opportunities while maintaining the same ability to create free points on his own delivery.

The +160 price accounts for the risk created by Shelton dropping a set in each round. But this is also his favorite type of matchup historically. He is 4-0 against Shapovalov, owns the superior current hard-court form and has shown all summer that his best serving stretches can make sets disappear quickly.

Ben Shelton vs. Denis Shapovalov Best Bet

A pair of tight sets could still decide whether this cashes, but Shelton has consistently won those high-pressure moments against Shapovalov before. Back the American to finally turn that matchup dominance into a straight-sets Grand Slam victory.
