Lionel Messi has been catapulted into the firm favourite to win the golden boot in this year’s Champions League due to a first round brace against Juventus last night.
Barcelona exacted revenge on Juventus for last year’s loss and Messi netted twice, causing punters to back him in their droves: since last night, 50% of bets for the tournament’s leading scorer have been on Messi.
In contrast, an outside favourite, Juventus’ Paulo Dybala, has seen his odds plummet in the fallout from last night’s loss. He has now drifted to 40/1 and bettors have backed off this option after Juventus’ lacklustre showing.
Messi is now the favourite with all bookmakers and ranges from 7/4 to 3/1. Prior to last night, he and Ronaldo were virtually neck in neck with regards to betting on the market, but Barcelona’s attacking prowess has obviously convinced punters to pile in on the Argentine.
Edison Cavani and Neymar Jr. saw their odds come in slightly after last night’s drubbing of Celtic while Luis Suarez has already drifted out to as high as 16/1 after a goalless show last night. Roberto Lewandowski remains the fourth favourite with best odds of 10/1.
