The five most backed football teams of 2018

The five most backed football teams of 2018

We look at the five teams that got more money on them than any other over the last 12 months.

In a year that saw football coming home (and then not), Man City becoming centurions and Loris Karius having the worst brain-fade of all time, we had so many thrilling matches.

Below are the five teams that had the most money staked on them over the last 12 months. Number One may surprise you...

5) Arsenal

Gone are the days of the 'Arsenal 4th place' jokes, but they very nearly finished there in this list: Instead, they were behind the next highest team, despite having had hundreds of more bets placed on them.

They can maybe console themselves with the fact that Spurs are fifth in this list, with punters preferring to back Unai Emery's men, which would have seen some tidy profit for those that got on during their long unbeaten run at the start of the season.

4) Chelsea

The highest placed London team on this list, the Blues had a funny old 12 months, looking languid at times under Conte (but winning the FA Cup) but also looking inspired under Maurizio Sarri. They had less single best on them than the other four teams, but had bigger average stakes.

3) Liverpool

The side with the most individual bets on them in 2018, Liverpool were also the best backed side for the Champions League. The single biggest stake on Jurgen Klopp's side was a four-figure bet when they played Crystal Palace at the start of the season. A 2-0 victory was enough to calm any nerves that the punter may have had!

2) Man City

City were so dominant that the short prices may have put off some, as they find themselves just off the top spot (much like real life!). The biggest stake on them wasn't even a winner - A four-figure stake was placed at draw no bet against Wolves. The scoreline was 1-1, and the punter may have been feeling a bit queasy come full time!

1) Man United

Yep, despite everything, Manchester United Football Club were the best backed team of 2018. It was certainly never dull with them last year, and it was definitely not dull for the punter who placed the single biggest match result bet of the year. He or she had United to beat Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Yes, that 3-2 game where the home side came back from 2-0 down to win in the last minute. Talk about a rollercoaster ride!
