BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022 Odds: Mead into 2/5 after England Euros win

BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022 Odds: Mead into 2/5 after England Euros win

The Euro 2022 best player and top scorer Beth Mead has been slashed into 2/5 to win this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Mead, who scored in four of England's six games at the tournament including a hat-trick against Norway, was a general 9/4 with bookmakers in the days leading up to the final against Germany.

The 27-year-old (now 2/5) claimed the top scorer prize despite finishing level with Alexandra Popp on six goals, as she registered more assists (five) than her German counterpart.

Mead's captain Leah Williamson, who became the first English footballer to lift a major trophy since 1966, has also seen her odds drastically reduced in light of Sunday's success. Available at 33/1 before the final, Williamson now carries a best price of 14/1 (12/1 in most places).

Ironically, the only other player ahead of Williamson other than favourite Mead is the men's captain Harry Kane, who shares a best price of 14/1 but is as short as 10/1 in places.

The 29-year-old striker enjoyed a purple patch in the second half of the 2021/22 Premier League season under Antonio Conte, as Spurs snatched the final Champions League place from under the noses of London rivals Arsenal. It’s likely that his price is skewed by the potential for England to go deep in the World Cup later this year in Qatar.

Mead's huge market move comes just a few weeks after Jonny Bairstow rocketed into contention with four centuries in just five test innings. The Yorkshireman came in from 50/1 to 20/1 in places, but is now available at 40/1 again after the Lionesses' special day at Wembley.

The biggest drifter, however, is seven-time snooker world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan who had been among the favourites since his latest Crucible triumph in May. As short as 7/2 before last night’s Euro 2022 Women’s final, you can now back O’Sullivan at a huge best price of 20/1.
