Cristian Romero's Tottenham future looks increasingly likely to end this summer, with Inter Milan now favourites to sign the World Cup finalist.
Cristian Romero's Tottenham future is edging closer to a conclusion, with reports growing more confident that the World Cup runner-up will leave north London this summer.
The Argentine centre-back was one of the standout performers as his country reached the final in New York, only to fall 1-0 to Spain after Ferran Torres' extra-time winner.
That tournament form has only sharpened interest from clubs across Europe, and with Tottenham having already brought in Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke to bolster their defensive options, the door appears to be opening for Romero's exit.
Cristian Romero Next Club Odds
The betting market currently has Romero's next destination as a three-way battle at the top, with the rest of the field trailing some way behind:
- Inter Milan – 6/4
- Barcelona – 11/8
- Atletico Madrid – 5/2
- Real Madrid – 8/1
- Juventus – 12/1
- Manchester United – 12/1
Who Is Favourite To Sign Cristian Romero?
Inter Milan currently edge it as favourites at 6/4 with BetVictor, and the logic isn't hard to follow. Romero already has Serie A experience from his time at Atalanta before his move to Tottenham, and his combative, front-foot style would slot naturally into a league where three-at-the-back systems are still widely used. The Nerazzurri are believed to have opened direct dialogue with his representatives as they assess whether a deal can be structured this summer.
Barcelona aren't far behind in the betting at 11/8, though their interest comes with a caveat. The Catalan club are said to view Romero as a target only if they can first move on one of their existing centre-backs, meaning their pursuit is somewhat conditional on business elsewhere in the squad. Even so, reports suggest Romero himself would be open to a move to Spain, where several of his international teammates already play, which could give Barcelona an edge if they clear the necessary space.
Cristian Romero Next Club Candidates
Inter Milan — The most advanced interest of the group, with Serie A familiarity and a defensive system that suits Romero's game. Their pursuit reportedly extends beyond Romero, with the Italian side also said to be tracking one of his Tottenham teammates.
Barcelona — Reportedly Romero's personal preference, but contingent on the club freeing up a spot in defence first. If that piece falls into place, Barcelona could quickly become serious rivals to Inter.
Atletico Madrid — A club well known for valuing defensive steel and combative centre-backs, making Romero a stylistic fit even if concrete talks haven't been reported.
Real Madrid — A longer-odds entry, but the pedigree and profile of a World Cup finalist always draws attention from the Bernabéu.
Juventus — Another Serie A option that would offer Romero a return to Italian football, where he made his name before his switch to the Premier League.
Manchester United — The outsider of the group, with nothing concrete reported, but a marker of the level of interest a player of Romero's calibre commands.
With Tottenham having already reshaped their back line this summer and their captain seemingly available at the right price, the coming weeks look set to determine whether Romero ends up in Milan, Madrid, or Barcelona.
