Next Man United Manager Odds: Who is the Favourite?

Eddie Howe is the 2/1 favourite to become Manchester United’s next permanent manager after Michael Carrick’s side were held to a 1-1 draw at Leeds.

Eddie Howe is the 2/1 favourite to become Manchester United’s next permanent manager after Michael Carrick’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds.

United have now gone six games without a win in all competitions and sit 13th in the Premier League with one win from seven. Howe has drifted from 2/1 yesterday to 9/4 today after United's performance at Elland Road displayed some fight. Antonio Conte and Fabian Hurzeler follow at 5/1 with Skybet.

Howe’s 2/1 price implies a 33.3% chance of taking the job, double the 16.7% attached to Conte or Hurzeler.

He has been out of work since leaving Newcastle in July, so United would not need to agree compensation. He took Newcastle into the Champions League and won the 2025 Carabao Cup, the club’s first major domestic trophy in 70 years.

His pressing style and Premier League record are the reasons he is rated highly by United’s hierarchy.

Conte and Hurzeler Share Second Place

Conte is available at 5/1 after BetVictor cut him from 6/1 to 3/1 on Tuesday. Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb reported that talks with United were progressing, but nothing has been confirmed.

His record includes the 2016/17 Premier League title with Chelsea and Serie A titles with Juventus, Inter and Napoli.

Hurzeler is also 5/1. The Brighton head coach has played down the speculation and says he is focused on “controlling the controllables”.

What Next for Carrick?

Man United put on a much more encouraging performance against Leeds as they drew 1-1 at Elland Road. United took the lead on 35 minutes when Bryan Mbeumo converted Youri Tielemans’ low cross. Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelled on 51 minutes, finishing after a Leeds corner was flicked on by Tarik Muharemovic.

Carrick continued with the same shape he played against Atletico in Madrid, using Bruno Fernandes and Tielemans in advanced midfield roles behind Mbeumo and Amad, with no traditional striker. It produced a more cohesive display than recent weeks, and United led at the break.

The numbers favoured Leeds, though. They created 1.44 xG to United’s 0.91, had 12 shots to 13 (five on target to three) and recorded 21 touches in United’s box against 12 in Leeds’.

Lisandro Martinez started despite his public criticism of technical director Jason Wilcox earlier in the week, for which he apologised. He was replaced by Noussair Mazraoui at half-time, and it was Mazraoui who conceded the corner that led to the equaliser.

The draw does little to settle the debate over Carrick’s future. He signed a permanent deal in May running to 2028 after United finished third last season, and reports have suggested INEOS have no plans to move him on.

His next test is a Champions League trip to Como. A fourth straight match without a win would put more pressure on a manager whose side now sit just two points above the relegation zone.
