Man City Relegation Odds: Will City Go Down After Guilty Verdict?

Man City Relegation Odds: Will City Go Down After Guilty Verdict?

What is the latest news on Man City's sanction after being found guilty of 114 charges brought by the Premier League.

Manchester City have won all seven of their Premier League games under Enzo Maresca, and they sit top of the table on 21 points, three clear of Arsenal. Yet they're priced as if a relegation fight is coming. Hull and Coventry are the only clubs shorter in the betting to drop into the Championship.

None of that comes from what's happening on the pitch. An independent commission's verdict, published on 29 September, found City guilty of all but one of the 115 charges brought by the Premier League. Those charges cover financial rule breaches between 2009-10 and 2017-18 and failing to co-operate with the investigation. No sanction has been set yet, and City lodged an appeal on 1 October. The relegation market is a bet on the size of a points deduction that hasn't been handed down, and on when it will land.

Will Man City Be Relegated?

The best price on City going down is 7/4, which implies a chance of about 36%. The shortest price is 6/5 (about 45%) with bet365, BetGoodwin, BetAhoy and BetTom.

The money is going one way. Oddschecker's bet history shows bet365 cutting City from 13/8 to 6/5 on Monday afternoon, after Betway went from 5/2 to 6/4 earlier that morning. Betfair moved to 17/10 at 15:01 and then cut again to 13/10 at 16:06. City are also the most popular bet in the market, ahead of Newcastle, Tottenham, Hull and Coventry.

For context, Spurs are bottom of the table on three points, yet you can still get 13/1 on them going down. In the market's view, a sanction is a bigger threat to the champions-elect than a poor start is to Spurs.

How Many Points Would Man City Need to Be Docked?

The usual survival line is around 35 points, so a deduction would need to significant to relegate them.

To finish on 40 points, City would need 59 points from their last 31 games after a 40-point deduction. That's 1.9 points per game. After a 60-point deduction, they would need 79 points, or 2.55 per game. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has said a deduction of more than 70 points would mean City are "effectively relegated".

The precedents are much smaller. Everton were docked 10 points in 2023-24, cut to six on appeal, and then lost two more later that season. Nottingham Forest lost four points the same season and still survived.

When Will the Man City Appeal Be Heard?

A new three-person Appeal Board will hear City's case in private. Under the Premier League's current rules, the hearing must happen within 12 weeks, which puts it around late December, and a decision is due within 30 days after that. The sanction is decided separately, and estimates for when any punishment lands range from early 2027 to not this season at all. That uncertainty explains why so many bookmakers have pulled the market.

City have maintained their innocence, saying the decision contains "clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe". Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said the club "systematically broke Premier League Rules for nearly a decade".
