Next Man Utd Manager Odds: Favourites & Carrick Chances to be Sacked

Next Man Utd Manager Odds: Favourites & Carrick Chances to be Sacked

After a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League Carrick's odds to be sacked have been slashed - who could replace him?

Four months after Michael Carrick was given the Manchester United job on a permanent basis, the betting has him as the Premier League manager most likely to leave his post next. Wednesday's 4-1 defeat at Como extended United's winless run to seven games in all competitions, their worst since Louis van Gaal's final season in 2015.

The contrast with last season is stark. Carrick took over as interim boss in January, won 12 of his 17 games and led United to third and a place in the Champions League, which earned him a two-year contract in May. This season United have won two of 11 matches, are 13th in the Premier League with seven points from seven games, and have made their worst league start since 1986. They are also out of the Carabao Cup after losing 3-2 at home to Brighton from 2-0 up.

Who Is Favourite in the Premier League Sack Race?

Carrick is favourite to be the first Premier League manager to leave his job this season. Ladbrokes and Coral have the best price at 7/4, an implied chance of about 36%. Most firms are much shorter at 4/6, about 60%. William Hill had him at 33/1 on 15 August and now go 8/11.

He is also the most popular bet with Oddschecker users, taking 97% of bets since their game yesterday.

Asked after Como whether he would walk away, Carrick said: "No. It's not about me right now." The pressure from inside the dressing room is growing, though. Bruno Fernandes questioned the decision not to press man-to-man, and Lisandro Martinez said after the defeat in Madrid that he expected more from technical director Jason Wilcox. "You can't keep changing, changing, changing the manager," the defender added.

Crystal Palace's Pierre Sage is second favourite at 9/2 (about 18%) after a 5-0 defeat by Brighton left Palace 14th. Fulham's Alvaro Arbeloa is third favourite at 8/1, and he took 12% of bets.

Who Is Favourite to Be the Next Man Utd Manager?

Eddie Howe is favourite to replace Carrick at 2/1, an implied chance of about 33%. He has been out of work since leaving Newcastle in the summer, and he has a long Premier League record behind him. His price has barely moved, staying between 15/8 and 9/4 since mid-September.

The bigger moves have come behind him. Antonio Conte, who left Napoli in May, has been cut by BetVictor from 9/1 on 17 September to 2/1. He is 5/1 elsewhere and has the most bets of anyone whose share I could read, at 16.49%. Brighton's Fabian Hurzeler has come in from 25/1 to 5/1 with Sky Bet and Paddy Power, although he signed a new contract in the summer and would be expensive to prise away. Julian Nagelsmann, available since leaving Germany after the World Cup, is also 5/1.

When Is Man Utd's Next Game?

United host Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday 25 October at 2pm GMT, then visit Chelsea on Saturday 31 October at 12.30pm. Roma come to Old Trafford in the Champions League on Tuesday 3 November, and Aston Villa visit on Sunday 8 November.

The club's decision-makers are expected to discuss Carrick's future before Bournemouth, but there has been no suggestion of an immediate change. Defeat on Sunday would make that discussion much harder, and at the shorter prices the market already has him as more likely than not to go first.
