The odds on Schalke to be relegated from the German Bundesliga have been slashed from 85/40 to 11/8 with BetGoodWin, and after a sixth-minute wobble turned into a losing run it is hard to argue with the move.
Schalke have lost their last two Bundesliga outings, at home to Mainz and away at Freiburg.
Three of nine bookmakers have cut their odds on Schalke to be relegated from the German Bundesliga.
Bet365 and Betway are still holding the best price of 7/4, so the market has not moved as one.
Paderborn remain the shortest price in the market at 4/5 with Betway, with Schalke third-shortest.
The home defeat to Mainz on 17 October is what moved the needle. Phillip Tietz scored the only goal at the Veltins-Arena, handing Schalke their first home loss of the Bundesliga season. Worse still, veteran striker Edin Džeko was forced off after an aerial collision left him with a deep head laceration that needed stitches, which is the last thing a side short on goals needed.
And that is the real worry: Schalke are toothless in front of goal at home. They have not scored in any of their home matches this season, with goalless draws against Bayern Munich and Elversberg coming before the Mainz loss. Club director Youri Mulder admitted afterwards that the team failed to show its core identity, and when the people inside the club say that out loud, bookmakers listen. BetGoodWin has reacted by cutting Schalke to 11/8, although Bet365 and Betway are holding firm at 7/4, so this is a selective move rather than a stampede.

Are Schalke favourites to be relegated from the German Bundesliga?
Not yet, as Paderborn are the favourites at a best price of 4/5 with Betway. Borussia Mgladbach come next, and Schalke sit third-shortest at 7/4 with Bet365, but with no home goals to their name the gap to the sides above them in the betting looks smaller than the prices suggest. On current form, we would not be surprised to see more firms follow the early cut.
Paderborn – 4/5 with Betway, the shortest price in the market.
Borussia Mgladbach – 5/4 with Bet365, second in the betting.
Schalke – 7/4 with Bet365 and Betway, but cut to 11/8 with BetGoodWin.
Union Berlin – 9/4 with Betway, the longest of the four leading names.

Can Schalke avoid being relegated from the German Bundesliga?
The next week will tell us plenty. Schalke head to FC Koln next in the Bundesliga, then travel to Dynamo Dresden in the DFB-Pokal, a cup outing that could at least offer a lift before the league grind resumes. Miron Muslic needs goals above everything else, and Džeko's recovery from that head injury matters for a side that simply cannot find the net in front of its own fans. Muslic's contract was automatically extended when Schalke won promotion, so there is no panic in the dugout, but another league defeat on the road would give more bookmakers reason to follow BetGoodWin's lead. Our view is that the cut is justified, and until Schalke start scoring at home, the best price of 7/4 with Bet365 is the one to take.
