City have drawn a home tie against Bradford City at the Etihad Stadium, despite losing 2-1 to Aston Villa in the Premier League last time out.
On the surface, this one looks a little odd. City's last full-time result was a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the Premier League, and that's hardly the kind of outing that sends traders running for the price board. That loss raised fair questions about how sharp Maresca's side really are going into a heavy run of fixtures. But the league is one thing and the cup is another, and the bookmakers have clearly split the two.
The real reason for the move is the draw. City have been handed a home tie against League One side Bradford City at the Etihad Stadium, and you'd struggle to ask for a friendlier pairing. Bradford earned their place with a 2-0 win over Peterborough United, which is a decent result in its own right, but the gap in squad depth between the two clubs is the whole story here. Home advantage plus a lower-league opponent is exactly why the price has come in from 3/1 so quickly: the bookmakers see a clear path for City and have priced it in.

Who is favourite to win the English League Cup?
Man City are the favourites at a best price of 6/4 with Bet365, and nothing in the draw argues against that. Liverpool are the nearest challengers, with Chelsea a step further back, while Newcastle, Aston Villa and Brighton all sit at double-figure prices. Bradford City are among the long list of outsiders, and how the odds on Man City have reacted to that pairing tells you how little the bookmakers expect an upset at the Etihad. For now, the shape of the betting is simple: City first, Liverpool second, then a sizeable gap.
Man City – 6/4 with Bet365, the shortened favourites with a home tie against Bradford City to come.
Liverpool – 11/4 with Bet Victor, the closest challengers in the betting.
Chelsea – 5/1 with Ladbrokes, third in the betting and well adrift of the top two.
Newcastle – 12/1 with Bet Victor and Betway, the best of the double-figure prices.

Can Man City go on to win the English League Cup?
First, City need to tidy up their league form after the Villa setback, and Brighton visit the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League next. After that comes RBL in the Champions League, so Maresca will have some squad juggling to do before the Bradford City tie comes round. That cup fixture is where this price gets earned or lost: get through it at home and the shortening looks fully justified, slip up and the bookmakers who cut will be just as quick to push City back out. Our view is that the move makes sense, because a home draw against lower-league opposition is a genuine boost. Most of the value has gone at 5/4, though, so if you want City onside, 6/4 with Bet365 is the number to take.
