Masters 2022 Most Backed: Justin Thomas primed for Augusta charge

Masters 2022 Most Backed: Justin Thomas primed for Augusta charge

Niall Lyons' headline selection Justin Thomas has pulled in the most single bets and more in total stakes than any other player for the Masters 2022 through oddschecker this week.

At the time of writing, 6.75% of the single bets for The Masters 2022 have been on the world number seven, who is enjoying his best putting season in four years – a part of the game that has stopped him from seriously contending at Augusta National in recent years.

Lyons said: “Thomas has threatened to take the course apart on numerous occasions only for something to get in the way almost each and every time.

“More often than not that has been putting around these treacherous greens. Generally speaking, the putter hasn't been an issue this term though finishing inside the top 20 on the greens at both the Valspar and the Genesis recently.

“In fact, to date this is his best season with the putter thus far for the past four years. That club can come and go though and as always we rely on a little luck. His game around the green is made for gains around Augusta and I can't see that being an issue this week either.

“The slight worry is that despite finishing inside the top 25 in his last five efforts at the course, he is yet to pose a serious threat to winning it.”

Someone else who is yet to pose a serious threat on a Masters Sunday (Thomas finished fourth in 2020 but eight shots behind Dustin Johnson) but has been well backed to contend this time around is former Open champion Shane Lowry (30/1 with 11 places).

He is second for single bets through oddschecker this week behind Thomas and fourth for total single stakes – American pair Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau are the others in the top four.

Speaking on the oddschecker Masters Preview, Lyons said of Lowry: “I just think he's hit a new level in the last couple of months. His game has developed so well this season to the point where he's almost playing top five in the world level - that's how good I consider the golf he’s playing to be.”

Koepka and Finau, both tipped up by Lyons on Monday, have struggled for form so far this year but appear to be trending in the right direction ahead of the year’s first major.

Four-time major winner just looks “backable” at a best price 22/1, said Lyons, while Finau kicked on from beating Xander Schauffele by four holes when shooting 7-under at the Match Play to post a decent top 30 finish at the Valero last weekend.
