Luke Donald's Europe host Zach Johnson's USA in the 2023 Ryder Cup, which starts this Friday at Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome.
Writing in his outright betting preview for the event, Niall Lyons describes the Ryder Cup as “the most bonkers week in the golfing calendar where hyperbole reigns and the calmest of heads lose all perception of sanity”.
On paper, Team USA should have the edge – they have the world’s number one player in Scottie Scheffler, while the lowest ranked of their 12-man roster is the resurgent Rickie Fowler (25), making his fifth Ryder Cup appearance in Rome.
Europe, by contrast, boast three of the top four ranked players in the world, but only two others in Donald’s 12 feature in the world's top 20.
They also have five outside the world’s top 30 and three outside the top 50 - Lyons' tip for zero points Robert MacIntyre (55), the in-form Ludvig Aberg (80) and controversial captain's pick Nicolai Hojgaard (82).

Who is favoured to win the Ryder Cup?
Team USA are the bookmakers’ favourites to win the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome at a best price of Evens (50% implied chance).
The slight underdogs Europe can be backed at best odds of 5/4 (44.4% chance), while the draw (there has just been one in 1989 at the Belfry) is the outside bet at 12/1.
USA hold the trophy after their record-breaking 19-9 victory at Whistling Straits in 2021. On that occasion, they held their biggest lead after day one – 6-2.
However, Europe should take confidence from the fact that USA have not won away from home since a 15-13 victory at the Belfry in 1993.
In the last match on European soil, Europe triumphed 17.5-10.5 with Francesco Molinari picking up a perfect five points – one of only three players to do so since 1979.
