The Open 2025 Tee Times, Course, Field & Dates at Royal Portrush

The 2025 Open Championship heads to Royal Portrush - we reveal the complete round 1 tee times as Rory McIlroy joins Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood.

The 153rd Open Championship returns to Royal Portrush from July 17–20, 2025, as golf’s most historic major takes centre stage once again.

Set along the stunning Northern Irish coastline, Portrush offers a true links test, where wind, weather, and course strategy often prove just as important as power and precision.

As the only major played outside the United States, The Open holds a special place on the global golf calendar, attracting a world-class field of PGA Tour, LIV Golf, DP World Tour stars and elite amateurs.

This year’s tournament is packed with storylines. Masters champion Rory McIlroy will tee it up on home turf as he looks to finally conquer Portrush after his heartbreaking missed cut in 2019.

Defending champion Xander Schauffele returns following his impressive win at Royal Troon last year, while World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler headlines the field after another dominant season.

Former champions Shane Lowry and Jon Rahm will also be aiming to recapture past glory, while rising talents like Ludvig Åberg and Robert MacIntyre look to break their major duck.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the full field for The Open Championship 2025, analyse the key contenders and provide the confirmed tee times ahead of Thursday’s opening round.

The Open 2025 Field

The 156-player field for the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush is now officially complete, featuring a global mix of elite professionals and rising amateurs.

Players qualify through 28 exemption categories, including past Open champions under 60, recent major winners, top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking, and standout performers from the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf.

Additional places are awarded via the Open Qualifying Series (OQS) and Final Qualifying events, with the final three spots secured by Chris Gotterrup, Nicolai Højgaard, and Matti Schmid at the Genesis Scottish Open.

This year sees a record 19 LIV Golf players in the field, more than any previous major, including major champions Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith.

Defending champion Xander Schauffele leads a strong roster of contenders alongside World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Shane Lowry, and Tommy Fleetwood, all eyeing the Claret Jug on one of golf’s most demanding stages.

The Open 2025 Course

Royal Portrush Golf Club’s Dunluce Links offers one of the most dramatic and challenging tests in championship golf, making it a fitting host for the 153rd Open Championship.

Situated along Northern Ireland’s rugged Antrim coastline, the course is famed for its sweeping sea views, natural dune formations, and intricate Harry Colt design.

First opened in 1929 and masterfully updated by Martin Ebert ahead of the 2019 Open, the layout demands precision, creativity, and resilience.

With firm, fast fairways, undulating greens, and ever-changing coastal winds, Royal Portrush forces players to control trajectory, navigate uneven lies, and make smart decisions across its 7,337-yard par-71 layout.

Standout holes like the par-3 “Calamity Corner” and the newly introduced 7th and 8th, crafted from the Valley Course, add further intrigue to a setup that rewards strategy as much as power.

As the only Open venue outside mainland Great Britain, Royal Portrush blends historic prestige with modern challenge, offering a stage worthy of golf’s oldest major.
