Cheltenham Festival 2022: Sir Gerhard most backed despite Supreme or Ballymore saga

The Supreme or Ballymore saga for Sir Gerhard at the Cheltenham Festival 2022 might have two more days to run, but he was still last week's number one ante-post racing pick.

This week's timeline for entries should finally shed some light on some of the most debated race choices for the Cheltenham Festival 2022, including for Sir Gerhard's trainer Willie Mullins.

Entries for Tuesday's races (kicking off with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle) will be announced this Wednesday (9th March), while those for Wednesday (starting with the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle) will be confirmed on Thursday (10th March).

For Monday to Sunday last week, Sir Gerhard - still a 5/2 second favourite in the Supreme and 11/8 favourite in the Ballymore - took almost 3.5% of all ante-post racing bets on oddschecker.

The most backed horse for a single race was Allaho for Thursday's Ryanair Chase, while second in the list was Shishkin - set for an epic rematch with Energumene in the Champion Chase on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the third most backed horse in the ante-post racing markets last week was Gaelic Warrior, who sits at the top of the market in the first day Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (best price 5/2) despite never having raced for Mullins.

Fourth on the list is Honeysuckle, the most backed ante-post horse for any individual race at Cheltenham across the first two months of 2022. The eight-year-old has a perfect 14 from 14 record heading into the defence of her Champion Hurdle crown.

And rounding off the top five for a single race takes us back to Sir Gerhard, despite the aforementioned uncertainty as to where he will end up. 44% of his ante-post bets were on the Ballymore 2021, with 55% for the Supreme.
