The momentum for a popular Cheltenham treble or four-fold gathered pace last week, with Honeysuckle, Allaho, Shishkin and Tiger Roll dominating the betting in their races.
For the week starting Monday 7th March, those four were behind only Sir Gerhard as the most backed ante-post horses for the Cheltenham Festival through oddschecker, although bets on Sir Gerhard were split given that Wille Mullins’ final decision on whether he would run in the Ballymore or Supreme was only made public on Saturday – and confirmed through final declarations yesterday.
Despite this ‘split’ as the saga rolled on throughout last week, Sir Gerhard was still being widely backed in both races. In fact, only Honeysuckle took more bets for a single race as she gears up for her Champion Hurdle defence tomorrow. 63.8% of the bets on the race last week through oddschecker were for the mare seeking an extension of her perfect 14/14 record.

The much discussed Sir Gerhard accounted for 54.2% of the bets for Wednesday’s Ballymore (and 4.6% of all ante-post bets last week), while third on the most backed per race last week was Allaho, who moves close to ‘banker’ territory in the eyes of the racing community having taken 77.8% of the Ryanair bets through oddschecker.
Fourth behind Honeysuckle, Sir Gerhard and Allaho for most bets on any race last week was Shishkin, backed in 67.7% of the bet slips ahead of his eagerly anticipated tussle with Energumene (11.9% of the race bets) in the second day Champion Chase.
