Racing Weekly: Nothing between two “world class” Epsom Oaks fillies

Rishi Persad and Sam Turner are back to recap a top-class weekend at Epsom for this week’s edition of Racing Weekly.

On Saturday, we saw Desert Crown and Richard Kingscote breeze to a comfortable victory in the Epsom Derby, but where did it rank among his best performances so far?

Turner had this to say about Sir Michael Stoute’s winner: “He was exemplary, wasn’t he? Beautifully behaved pre-race, unaffected by the fireworks, beautifully prepared, stepped forward from the Dante and I thought that was a polished performance, but this took it to another level.”

Our guest on Episode 1, Rob Hornby, gave Westover a valiant ride to finish in third from an SP of 25/1, and Turner doesn’t see any reason why they can’t put up a challenge in the Irish Derby.

“I don’t see any reason with a good draw, why that track really wouldn’t suit him beautifully,” he said. “A long-striding horse, he should be well suited to the undulations and configuration of The Curragh.”

Westover is the 2/1 favourite for the Irish Derby following his performance at Epsom at the weekend.

On Friday, meanwhile, we saw Tuesday (ridden by Ryan Moore) pip Frankie Dettori and favourite Emily Upjohn to win the Oaks, two fillies who Turner described as “world class”.

Despite a start which may have hindered Emily Upjohn, Persad does not believe that there is much difference in quality between the two fillies.

He noted: “Watching that race again, as they get to the three-furlong mark, Emily Upjohn is ahead and Frankie (Dettori) is travelling well, so I wouldn’t want to take too much credit away from Tuesday. I wouldn’t be adamant if they met again that Emily Upjohn would be victorious.”

Tuesday has odds of 20/1 and 25/1 respectively for the Coral Eclipse and Sussex Stakes, whereas Emily Upjohn is 10/1 for the Juddmonte Stakes.

The third of the Group 1’s at Epsom this weekend was won by Hukum, who provided Owen Burrows win his maiden Group 1 success.
