Martin Pipe Betting Tips: Waterford Whispers takes 18% of the race winner bets

Henry de Bromhead's Waterford Whispers is preferred by punters over Willie Mullins' Quai De Bourbon in the final race of the Festival.

The Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle is a handicap hurdle race that is only open to conditional jockeys. Potential runners in the race cannot be rated higher than 145 and, as such, the race is often won by novice hurdlers or those not rated high enough to get into Wednesday’s Coral Cup.

It has been run since 2009 and has unearthed many future Grade 1 winners including Sir Des Champs, Don Poi and reigning Gold Cup champion Galopin Des Champs. Willie Mullins is the leading trainer in the race with four wins whereas no jockey has won the race more than once.

We finish this week with a Henry de Bromhead favourite, Waterford Whispers (more than 17% backed through oddschecker). He completed a double when winning at Galway and Fairyhouse and just came up short in his hat-trick attempt at Leopardstown in December.

The horse that finished behind him in third that day has since come third in a listed race, so the form looks solid. He's an unexposed type and comes in at a low mark of 133 which might just underestimate this runner, who just might have more to offer.

All the talk in the run up to Friday at Cheltenham was about Quai De Bourbon (11% of bets); however, this Mullins horse has drifted in the market today. This five-year-old has two wins from two starts and has leading claims despite a mark of 140 looking a touch high.
