We look at the five horses currently just outside the top 34.
The final 34 horses for the 2024 Grand National will be confirmed by 10am on Thursday 11th April, just over 48 hours before the race.
The maximum number of runners for the race has been reduced from 40 to 34, marking the first reduction since 1984. There is also a new time for the race after safety issues blighted the 2023 renewal won by Corach Rambler.
Architect Tips looks at the latest betting odds and chances of the five horses currently just outside the magic 34.
Kitty’s Light – 14/1
It’s not been the smoothest of years for his Welsh handler, but this eight-year-old will not lack stamina and would be considered a player if he makes the final field having claimed the Eider Chase, Scottish National and Bet365 Gold Cup treble last year.
I think Christian Williams has campaigned this horse brilliantly time and time again, and I can see this extreme test of stamina really suiting him. He warmed up for this with a spin in the Ultima Handicap at Cheltenham last month.
He is likely to scrape into this race near the bottom of the weights (10st 6lb) and if he doesn’t get himself too far back and takes to the fences, he could win this. He’s a definite for the shortlist (currently 14/1 on William Hill).

Malina Girl – 66/1
She shaped very well over hurdles last time out and is a strong stayer for Gavin Cromwell based on her win at Cheltenham in November, but she looks out of her depth and is likely to be outclassed if she makes the field. Overlooked.
Desertmore House – 40/1
This nine-year-old, trained by Martin Brassil, has won three of his six starts over fences and ran very well when third over hurdles last time out. He would be very well suited to this extreme test of stamina and should have plenty more to come. He missed the Irish Grand National in favour of this race.
Kinondo Kwetu – 125/1
This eight-year-old is largely consistent yet while he ran disappointingly at Cheltenham when last spotted, his record at this course is really good. He’s run here three times, which has resulted in two wins and a third.
Shakem Up’Arry – 66/1
Ben Pauling’s charge is having a great season and would love the conditions. He’s won his last couple of starts at Cheltenham, including the Plate last month, and has run well in his two previous trips to Merseyside. He needs a few horses to be taken out to be eligible for a run.
