Two Grade 1 races take place at Sandown this Saturday, including the Tingle Creek Chase.
The Tingle Creek Festival at Sandown, held over two days, signals the festive season’s arrival for racing fans. Taking place on 6-7 December, this meeting features some fantastic Grade 1 action, headlined by the Tingle Creek Chase on Saturday.
The Tingle Creek Chase has been run since 1969 and has since become the top Grade 1 over the minimum trip outside of Cheltenham.
This iconic race has showcased legendary names like Desert Orchid, Moscow Flyer, and Sprinter Sacre since it was first run in 1969. The 10 runners taking to the post on Saturday hoping to be viewed in that category.
With last year's winner Jonbon leading the betting and Edwardstone, a past winner, among the challengers, this year’s renewal promises drama and excitement. However, the ante-post third favourite Found A Fifty (Grade 2 Fortria Chase winner) has been scratched this morning.
Found A Fifty had taken just short of 5% of the bets through oddschecker in the last seven days. Only Boothill (6%), Qulixios (36%) and short-price favourite Jonbon (45%) have had more.

Tingle Creek Chase Winners
2023: Jonbon showcased his brilliance in last year’s Tingle Creek Chase, delivering a commanding performance to cement his place among the elite. The seven-year-old locked horns with Haddex Des Obeaux and Edwardstone over the Pond Fence but as they approached the last, Jonbon shifted gears, racing clear to win by an impressive two-and-three-quarter lengths as the 30/100 favourite.
2022: Edwardstone was unstoppable in the 2022 renewal, claiming a dominant nine-length victory under Tom Cannon. The then-seven-year-old faced stiff competition from defending champion Greaneteen and the Shishkin, who was returning from an injury, but surged clear after the second-last fence. For Edwardstone, it was a second festive-season triumph at Sandown, following his Henry VIII Novices’ Chase victory the year prior.
2021: Greaneteen brought glory to trainer Paul Nicholls with a 12th Tingle Creek victory for his yard in 2021. Ridden by Bryony Frost, who made history as the first female jockey to win the race, Greaneteen led a Nicholls one-two, with Hitman finishing second and Captain Guinness third. Frost’s decisive move after the last fence left no doubt as Greaneteen powered home for a five-and-a-half-length success.
Tingle Creek Chase Tips
Steve Ryder's ante-post selection as part of his weekly ante-post column for Oddschecker Unlimited last week was the Harry Fry trained nine-year-old BOOTHILL (best priced at 9/1 on William Hill).
"The Harry Fry trained nine-year-old finished 2nd behind Jonbon in the Henry VIII Novice Chase here as a novice before missing this race last season because of the heavy ground. The forecast looks good next week so it would be a surprise if they get those conditions this year."
"Boothill won his first two races last season at Ascot before falling at Kempton and Newbury on his next two starts. He outran odds of 40/1 to finish 4th beaten only 7 ¼ lengths behind Jonbon, El Fabiolo and Edwardstone in the Celebration Chase on his final start last season which can be upgraded given his poor preparation for the race."
