Grade 1 Races on Day 1 at Royal Ascot

2:30 Queen Anne Stakes

The top four from the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury renew their rivalry in the Queen Anne, with connections of Rosallion and Notable Speech hoping their classic-winning colts can improve on their seasonal reappearances. Both are rated 122, ahead of Lead Artist at 120 and Dancing Gemini at 119.

Sardinian Warrior, Docklands, and Quddwah have all secured wins over this straight mile course and distance, making them potential each-way contenders alongside Carl Spackler, who debuts for trainer Ciaron Maher.

3:40 King Charles III Stakes

Defending champion Asfoora returns to face last year’s runner-up Regional, fourth-placed Believing, and fifth-placed Kerdos, plus two promising four-year-olds, Night Raider and Starlust. William Buick rides Mgheera, who triumphed in the Temple Stakes, beating Washington Heights, American Affair, Rumstar and Twilight Calls.

4:25 St James’s Palace Stakes

This promises to be a highlight of the week, pitting 2000 Guineas winner Ruling Court against Irish 2000 Guineas victor Field Of Gold and French 2000 Guineas winner Henri Matisse.

The market favours John & Thady Gosden’s runner to overturn Newmarket form with Ruling Court, with Colin Keane, Juddmonte’s new retained jockey, in the saddle. With Windlord and First Wave also running, this tactical battle should crown the generation’s top miler.
